In another controversial twist for the ill-fated John Lewis building in Barker’s Pool, the BBC reported this morning that Historic England has awarded the former Cole Brothers store Grade 2 listed status.
The lease for the building, which takes up over 200,000 sq ft of space, was acquired by Sheffield Council in January 2022 and its future was recently the subject of a public survey.
Around 1,500 people responded to proposals of what to do with the site, which returned a majority verdict in favour of flattening the original building and replacing it with a smaller structure and outdoor space.
Of course, its new protective status now means the building must remain standing and be repurposed within the proper guidelines.
