Sheffield’s O2 Academy, which has been closed since September 2023 due to concerns about reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in the building’s roof, may soon see a revival.

Plans have been submitted to Sheffield City Council proposing the replacement of the venue’s roof – a crucial step towards reopening its doors to music fans.

The O2 Academy has long been a hub for live music, hosting a diverse array of artists and events over the years. Following concerns that the venue may be closed for good, the proposed roof replacement underscores a commitment to its return and, more importantly, to ensuring it is made a safe and welcoming space for future performances.

The planning application highlights the importance of the roof replacement, stating: “The existing roof structure has reached the end of its serviceable life, leading to water ingress and associated damage to the interior. Replacing the roof is essential to prevent further deterioration and to comply with current building regulations.”

It further emphasises that with the installation of a new roof, the venue would be “brought back to life,” allowing it to continue serving as a premier destination for live music in Sheffield.

If approved, the roof replacement could pave the way for the O2 Academy to resume its role as a key venue for live music in the city.
