A brand-new dining spot is about to hit Dyson Place, and it’s bringing bold flavours, wood-fired cooking, and a seriously inviting atmosphere. Six and a Half, the new restaurant from former Brocco on the Park head chef Leslie Buddington, opens its doors this Friday, and we got the lowdown on what to expect.

Expect sharing plates, top-quality ingredients and everything cooked over wood fire by Leslie himself. “We’ve had a bespoke grill made, so we’re going to be cooking meat, fish, veg – everything – over wood,” says Leslie. “I wanted it to feel like my kitchen, like people are coming into my home. That’s why we’ve got the wooden counter at the pass, so it feels more intimate. Customers can see what the chefs are doing, and we can chat with them. It’s about that connection.”

As for the menu, don’t expect it to be tied down to one particular cuisine. “It’s a bit of flavour from everywhere, really. Big, bold flavours, taking inspiration from all over the world, but keeping it simple and seasonal,” Leslie explains. One of the standout dishes is a hefty one-kilo salt-aged porterhouse steak for two, cooked over fire. “We trialled it last night, and it’s mega. Just a big piece of meat for two people to share – cooked over fire, it’s incredible.”

While some dishes, like the porterhouse, will feel like a bit of a treat, accessibility is key for Leslie. Small plates start at £7, and there’s a three-course set lunch menu for those wanting something lighter during the day. “I want it to be a place people can come to for a few dishes at lunch, then transition into dinner. I don’t want it to just be a ‘destination’ place where people feel like they have to get dressed up – it’s about community too.”

The drinks list follows the same philosophy: small but well considered. “We’ve got six reds, five whites, a rosé, a dessert wine, a champagne, a cava and four cocktails. Not a massive list, but everything complements the food,” says Leslie.

Having spent years consulting and working as a private chef after his time at Brocco, opening his own place is something Leslie has been working towards for a while. “This is the first time on my own. I’m excited but nervous. I’ll be happy when I don’t have to see any more builders,” he laughs. “It’s only a small place, but the attention to detail is huge. There’s been a lot to get right.”

With 28 covers inside and a further 22 on the terrace, Six and a Half is aiming for an intimate, relaxed feel. It’ll be open Wednesday to Saturday for lunch (12pm – 3pm) and dinner (6pm – 11pm), with Sundays through Tuesdays available for private hire. “We’ll open for special occasions too – things like Mother’s Day or if there’s a Sharrow Vale market on. It’s important to be part of the community.”
