A new restaurant with a community ethos at its heart is set to open Thurs 9 Nov. Located on North Church Street, just behind Sheffield Cathedral, Blend Kitchen @ The Printhouse is an independent eatery which sources all its produce from local businesses and offers training in the catering and hospitality industry to those seeking it.
What’s more, it is affordable, with food prices starting at as little as £3. Not what you’d expect from a restaurant that prides itself on fresh locally-sourced ingredients, serving something as upmarket sounding as Roast Pigeon breast, braised leg, beetroot puree, parsnip and potato roast for just £9; and as delicious as a dark chocolate parfait, marinated cherries, almond shortbread for £6. Yes, £6. Just to name a few. For those of you who have a taste for the savoury, you can finish the night with a selection of English cheeses, crackers, grapes and chutney.
Their Christmas menu takes a twist on the original Christmas meal, but sounds just as (or more) appetizing: it includes, to name a few, a starter of sautéed prawns, chorizo, peppers, spinach and sourdough toast; a main of whole sea bass, pak choi, noodles, soy and ginger sauce; and finally, lemon posset, blueberry jelly and shortbread.
Earlier this year Blend worked in partnership with Brathay Trust at William Sutton Community Hall in Hillsbrough, a community largely surrounded by easily accessible, unhealthy takeaways – convenient after a long day at work. The training programme taught volunteers how to cook healthy and easy to prepare meals, with the aim of getting people interested in cooking their own food and enjoying it. They spent a period of nine weeks training, ready to serve their creations at weekly community meals on a Friday evening.
As well as serving food, the venue will host a weekly coffee morning on Thursdays from 10am-1.30pm, serving freshly made hot drinks and light snacks for a £1 minimum donations. Blend will also run events from The Printhouse. Blend’s AGM and official launch party will be held on opening day from 4 – 6pm, for anyone interested in finding out more about Blend’s work and sampling their food.
