If you’re taking a holiday abroad, you’ll want to pack smart. There’s nothing worse than arriving at your destination after a long journey to discover that you don’t have something you really need.

This handy guide lists everything you should pack in your suitcase for your next holiday abroad, from travel documents to medications and everything in between.

Bring Medications Before You Go

Pharmacies abroad don’t always stock the same brands or dosages as you’re used to, and, especially in cities and tourist destinations, you’ll generally end up paying more even for over-the-counter medicines.

It makes a lot of sense to buy essentials like painkillers, antihistamines, rehydration salts, and travel sickness tablets from an online pharmacy before you go, so you’re covered in any common scenario once you arrive. Click here to order Naproxen and other medications you might need before traveling.

If you take prescription medication, make sure you have enough for the whole trip, plus a little extra as a buffer in case your trip home ends up getting delayed.

Travel Documents and Copies

Your travel documents, including passports, visas, and travel insurance details are also essential to bring in your travel bag.

Keep physical copies of all these documents in a waterproof bag, and, for emergencies, keep a digital version or photo of each document on your phone. Keep in mind that some countries require proof of onward travel or accommodation bookings, so it’s best to check the entry requirements before you fly.

The Right Plug Adapters

When you’re traveling abroad, you’ll need to bring plug adaptors so you can charge your phone and other devices regardless of where you’re heading.

The UK uses Type G sockets, but Europe, the US, and most other countries use different types. If you do a lot of traveling, it’s worth investing in a universal travel adapter with multiple plug types that should cover most destinations. Consider buying a power bank as well, especially if you’re flying with a layover, as not all airports have accessible charging points.

Weather-Appropriate Clothing

Before you travel, don’t just check the weather. Since weather can be unpredictable and forecasts are often wrong, it’s a good idea to check the general climate for your destination during your season of travel so you can be prepared for all possible outcomes.

If the weather at your destination is known to be unpredictable, pack layers so you can wrap up warm if needed. And if you’re heading somewhere tropical, you’ll need light clothing and a good SPF. Don’t have a lot of room in your suitcase? You can always wear a few layers on the plane so you can stay warm under the air con (and it’s easy to remove layers if you get too hot).

A Small First Aid Kit

Just as you can get sick anywhere, you can also get injured while you’re traveling. In fact, injuries are more likely when we’re on holiday because we’re in an unfamiliar environment doing things that are outside of our normal routines.

To prepare for minor injuries, pack a small first aid kit with plasters, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and bandages. And, of course, make sure you’re covered by travel insurance in case of an emergency.

Takeaway

For many of us, traveling abroad is the highlight of the year.

We all want our holidays to be as enjoyable and memorable (for all the right reasons!) as possible, and these packing tips should ensure you have everything you need, so you can focus on the most important thing: having fun.
