Your choice of bathroom tile will have an enormous impact on the overall look of the room – and it might have practical consequences, too. There are hundreds of tiles to choose from, each of them varying considerably in price and quality. So exactly what should you be looking for when you’re considering the investment? Let’s take a look at the more important factors.

Style

The most obvious attribute of a set of tiles is the way that it looks. Here’s where the most variety is to be found. You might find bold colours, veined natural stone, or patterned tiles. When you’re assessing hundreds of samples, it’s easy to lose sight of the context in which you’ll be installing the tiles. Here’s where showrooms can be invaluable. Size

Similarly, the size of your tiles will have a big effect on the way that they look. For floors, you can get away with larger tiles. For accents and trims, you might judiciously use smaller ones. Bear in mind that the smaller the tile, the more grouting you’ll be doing, and the more cleaning they’ll require. If you’re looking for a spa-style floor-to-ceiling mosaic, you’ll be breaking out an old toothbrush every so often to scrub the whole thing.

The size of your room may influence the size of your tiles. If you find that your tiles are crossing at corners in an ugly way, you might need to do some rethinking. The larger your tiles, the stranger it’ll look if there’s just a little bit left in the corner.

Shape

Most tiles, obviously, are rectangular. Tiles of this kind not only slot together more easily, but they’re easier to store and transport, which makes them more affordable. Not every space, to be sure, is suited to the trusty rectangle, however. Some bathrooms might make use of elaborate patterns of interlocking hexagons, crosses, rhombuses.

And, of course, there’s a great deal of variety to be found within rectangles themselves, which can be long and narrow, or perfectly square (we’ll leave it to mathematicians to worry about whether a square is a rectangle).

The way that your tiles are arranged can provide another means of injecting variety into the space. Here’s where you can go incredibly outlandish, or perfectly regular. If you have something exotic in mind, then talk to your tiler about what’s achievable. It might be that they have some considerations you haven’t thought of.
