Sheffield city council has estimated that hosting the World Snooker Championships at our own Crucible Theatre benefits the city to the tune of £3 million.
The World Championships has been at the famous theatre since 1977, and recently celebrated its 40th year at the venue by signing on for another decade, ensuring the Crucible gets a very special half century celebration in 2027.
In an interview given to the Sheffield Star, Richard Eyre, head of city centre at the council, commented on the £3 million economical boost: “From our point of view, there is a real buzz around the city centre and Tudor Square looks fantastic.

“I think from a spectating point of view, it’s one of the biggest tournaments we’ve had. It’s certainly one of the biggest I have seen and I’ve been involved in it for 15 years. I think the thing about the snooker is that every single year the Winter Garden is packed and people can get really close to those involved.
“You don’t get that with other sports and there’s a real buzz around the Crucible when it’s on.”
More than one billion people around the world tuned in to watch this year’s World Championships which eventually saw Judd Trump win his first world title. If you want to grab a ticket for next year’s tournament, tickets are already flying out the door. Grab one here.
