There’s nothing worse than running out of data when you’re out and about, well OK there are probably quite a few things a lot worse, but from May 2018 you won’t have to worry about it in Sheffield city centre at least.

Sheffield City Council and Idaq Networks Ltd have teamed up to bring free high-speed Wi-Fi to outdoor spaces and public buildings in the city centre.

Plans have been in the pipeline for a while now, but on Tuesday they announced some key details:

  • The first stage of Wi-Fi will be available from May 2018 and will include the theatre district and retail zone (including Fargate, the Moore, Peace Gardens, Tudor Square and Pinstone Street).
  • The second three phases in July and September 2018 will roll out the coverage to West Street, Devonshire street, the station, Ponds Forge and the Cultural Industries/Devonshire quarter.
  • The Wi-Fi will have 20Mbps download speeds and 4Mps upload speeds.
  • The contract will be maintained for 10 years.
