Sheffield Photographer Tim Dennell has had one of his lockdown photos added to the Historic England Archive. The photo was centred around a pub that had closed its doors, but had messages thanking NHS and key workers painted on the boards that covered its windows.

The Historic England Archive chose Tim’s photo to represent the Yorkshire region in their Picturing Lockdown Collection.

According to Tim this photo was significant as,

Pubs were ordered to shut, and they did. Shops and restaurants had already closed. I work in a key service sector and was moved to see that though businesses like this are being hard hit they’d put a message thanking the NHS staff.

When it became obvious the pandemic would make a historic impact, Tim started to document the pandemic throughout the Steel City. He took photos from March 2020 until legal restrictions were lifted in July 2021.

His picture will join others to form a permanent visual record of this unusual time in history.

If you would like to see more of Tim’s work, here is a video he has produced presenting a pictorial timeline of Sheffield’s response to the Covid-19 Pandemic, told in 265 images.
